Open-heart surgery, introduced 5 decades ago, marked a medical breakthrough. In 1955, Denis Melrose pioneered elective cardiac arrest (“cardioplegia”) to address challenges in operating conditions. In 1975, Hans J. Bretschneider of the University of Gottingen developed an “intracellular” cardioplegic solution, leading to 3 million worldwide procedures. Today, with changing patient demographics and surgical methods (MICS), our webinar will provide an update on using HTK organ protection solution in modern cardiac surgery.
